Devastating Hurricane Leaves Hundreds Missing in Southeast #

A deadly hurricane has struck the southeastern United States, leaving a trail of destruction and hundreds of people unaccounted for across multiple states. The storm, which has claimed at least 213 lives across six states, is now the deadliest hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland in nearly two decades.

Search and rescue efforts are ongoing as crews navigate through washed-out roads, destroyed bridges, flooded towns, and bloated rivers to reach those in need. Their efforts are being hindered by ongoing cellular service issues in affected areas.

The exact number of missing individuals remains unclear, with authorities still working to confirm totals in the aftermath of the hurricane. Meanwhile, concerned family members and friends continue their desperate search for loved ones through social media and other channels.

North Carolina has been particularly hard hit, with the highest death toll reported at 106 fatalities. In one county alone, more than 200 people were unaccounted for as of Thursday night, with the local death toll standing at 72.

Several harrowing stories have emerged from the disaster:

  • A man went missing after texting his wife that his Jeep was “starting to float away” as floodwaters surrounded their home.
  • A teacher and her husband were swept away when their newly-built home was carried off by floodwaters. The husband managed to survive, but the teacher remains missing.
  • A mother of two disappeared after becoming trapped by rising floodwaters while at work.
  • A man was last seen trapped on his apartment building’s balcony, calling for help as the structure was carried away by the flood.
  • A couple was caught in a mudslide that demolished the neighbor’s house where they had sought refuge. While one was rescued, the other remains missing.

Search and rescue teams are utilizing specialized resources such as search dogs and drones to thoroughly check areas, including those previously cleared, to ensure no one is overlooked.

Local officials emphasize their commitment to accounting for all citizens and visitors, ensuring basic needs are met, and continuing efforts to protect and save lives. The affected communities are demonstrating remarkable determination and resilience in the face of this catastrophic event.

As the search continues, families of the missing cling to hope that their loved ones will be found safe, while authorities work tirelessly to navigate the challenges posed by the hurricane’s aftermath.
